“My idea of feminism is self-determination, and it’s very open-ended: every woman has the right to become herself, and do whatever she needs to do.” – Ani DiFranco
I love this quote about feminism. I would not regularly refer to myself as a feminist, but in this context I can greatly relate. You can find several examples like this out there, but they are all too often hidden by aggressive bra burning messages.
The reality is yes, there are issues that have been around forever, but many of today’s feminism stances go back to self-determination. It’s more about women doing what they want than anything else. We have the ability to make choices for ourselves now, so we should take advantage of it.
Feminism is about becoming the women you want to be, not the woman you think you need to be in comparison to men. As long as you are pushing forward and not taking a back seat to your own life then you, my friend, are a feminist. You do not have to participate in women’s marches or constantly fight for pay equality to be a feminist.
Feminism does not have to be loud and in your face. It can simply be standing up for your own personal beliefs as a woman unapologetically. Let’s change the conversation around feminism into an empowerment movement for all, men and women. Let’s all be feminists and love ourselves enough to follow our dreams and never settle for less.
