My husband and I are training for a 15k, coming up in a couple weeks. Our long run was 7 miles this week and the wind was blowing in our faces the whole second half. Despite our efforts we had to walk a little during the last mile.
In, thinking about what I wanted to write about today, I reflected on our run and something I said to my husband to try to motivate him. When he mentioned how difficult it was running against such gusty winds, I replied with “you have to try not to focus on it”. That’s when a light bulb went off.
I like many runners get lost in my own mind during a long run. Despite crappy conditions and pain I tend to let my mind wander and forget about the obstacles. When he mentioned the wind, I realized that I had completely forgotten about it, as I was more focused on our pace at that moment.
It can be really hard to widen our focus when there are glaring issues and things that bother us hitting us in the face. So, we fixate on them to try and overcome said struggles. Unfortunately, what happens is, we end up wearing ourselves out.
We let those things get into our minds and bring us down, rather than accepting the situation and adjusting our thoughts. Our minds are so powerful. Our thoughts and what we focus on can make us or break us.
If we can keep from narrowing our focus we will see that life is not that bad. We would see that our problems are much smaller when we look through that lense. So, remember to broaden your focus, the world is much prettier that way.
