Essentials of Happiness

Everyone wants to know how to be happy. We continue to search for ways to improve our lives. We ask our elders the secret to a happy life, but the answers are within us the whole time.

Allan K. Chalmers says, “the grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.” I really like this perspective. It keeps this search for happiness realistic.

Think about your life right now. Do you have something to do? Do you have a job, chores, a hobby or a social life? Then you have one of the essentials of happiness.

Now, do you have something to love? Do you love a spouse, a child, a pet, a friend, family or yourself? We all have something/ someone to love. Love is not about having a perfect marriage or relationship. Love is about surrounding yourself with something/ someone you look forward to seeing and would do anything for.

The last question is do you have something to hope for? Do you have hopes of a marriage, a family, a dream job, to own a house, a vacation etc. We all have hopes. We all have something to look forward to.

The important thing to remember in your search for happiness is that you already have it. We all have the essentials. They will look different than others, but they are the same at their core. Happiness is about honoring your spirit and needs. You may not “feel” happy all the time, but you possess the fundamentals that make up your deeper happiness. The next time you feel happy take notice of why. It is likely there is a direct connection to one of the essentials
