We have heard the saying, “you are what you eat”. We know that what we put in our bodies will directly affect how we feel and look. So, we try to eat healthy and have balanced meals throughout the day.
What about our thoughts though? Do you ever wonder why you are negative or pessimistic? Do you wish you could get out of that pattern or funk?
You are what you think. Your actions and words are a direct reflection of what you think. Many times we try the concept of “if you can’t say anything nice, then say nothing at all”. While this is not a bad idea, it does not get to the root of the problem.
If you are walking around with a chip on your shoulder and negativity in your mind it will come out eventually. It is only natural that you will let your emotions and feelings show at some point. Those emotions will likely be the result of thoughts you have kept to yourself and had repeatedly over time.
So, how do you clean up your mental diet, so to speak? While it is healthy to have cheat days, just like a regular diet, it is important to find consistency throughout the other days. If you strive to be happier in 2018 then work on constantly thinking about things that make you happy. If you want to be more positive in 2018 then look on the bright side of every situation.
The bottom line is that we can have unhappy and negative emotions in moderation. However, the goal is to acknowledge those emotions and find ways to think about them differently and in a positive way. If we can change our thoughts to be more joyful then we will become more joyful. Remember, you are what you think.
