What are your ingredients?

Have you heard the Sara Bareilles song, She Used to be Mine? It is a beautiful song from her musical on Broadway, Waitress. I was fortunate enough to see this show back and September and have loved her music for many years.

If you have not heard the song, the chorus goes like this: a024c7104f39376a722a72e1e4ba573d

“She’s imperfect, but she tries
She is good, but she lies
She is hard on herself
She is broken and won’t ask for help
She is messy, but she’s kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie”

Of course, the song itself is relatable and lovely, but I got to thinking about the last line, “she is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie.” Pies like any recipes call for a variety of ingredients. Those ingredients provide a multitude of flavors; sweetness, saltiness, bitterness etc.

Like pies, we are all made up of different things that make us who we are. I like to think of our thoughts as our ingredients, so to speak. We are a combination of ingredients that make us who we are.

However, you can choose your ingredients. Every day we choose how we respond to various stimuli thorough our initial thoughts. What ingredients you choose will determine your actions and perceptions.

Think about a recipe, if you add too much garlic, for example, the dish can become almost spicy and overwhelming. The same is true for your thoughts, if you are overloading your mind with frustrated thoughts you will likely be more agitated and angry.

Put the ingredients in your life that provide you the most joy. Sometimes you will have too much salt, so try to balance out the next day with sugar. The best recipes provide a perfect balance of flavors, so what ingredients will you choose to make up the recipe that is you?
